Calisthenics comes from the ancient Greek word kalos, which means “beauty”, and sthenos, meaning “strength”. It is the art of using one’s body weight and qualities of inertia as a means to develop one’s physique.
Get in touch with your primal self! Calisthenics is the oldest form of working out. Before there was a squat rack, a flat bench, or dumbbells, mankind used their own body weight as a resistance training, primarily for survival and hunting.
They are intended to increase body strength, body fitness and flexibility through movements such as pushing, pulling, jumping, swinging, twisting or kicking, using only one’s body weight for resistance. They are usually conducted in concert with stretches. When performed with intensity and with variety, calisthenics can provide the benefits of muscular and aerobic conditioning, in addition to improving motor skills such as balance, agility and coordination.
When it comes to a test of strength and physical abilities, calisthenics is often used as a baseline physical evaluations for many military organizations, such as the U.S.M.C. Army Physical Test.
Functional Training is the name of the game! You should be able to move your body and have control over your own body weight. To top it off you can do calisthenics without any equipment or minimum equipment required. NO EXCUSES!!
